CANADIAN DIRECTORY GUIDE

Choosing a Christian therapist in Canada

Your faith can matter in therapy. So can professional qualifications, practical access and feeling understood. Use these questions to compare your options.

By GracePath Therapists · Updated October 19, 2026. This is a guide to choosing a professional, rather than clinical advice.

Start with the support you are looking for

Write down the main concern you want help with, who needs support and whether you prefer online or in-person appointments. You do not need to disclose your full personal history in a directory enquiry. A short explanation and a question about availability can be enough to start.

Check qualifications and authorization

Ask for the professional’s title, registration or certification body, number and the province or territory where they are authorized to work. Check current standing with the relevant body where a public register is available. If there is no public register, ask how the credential can be confirmed with its issuer. A certification and a provincial licence are different credentials; ask what each permits in your location.

If the professional practises under supervision, ask who supervises them and how that arrangement works. Pastoral counselling may be offered outside a regulated clinical profession; clarify the provider’s training, scope and referral arrangements.

Discuss what faith integration means to you

A shared Christian identity does not describe every therapist’s approach. You might want a clinical focus that respects your beliefs, faith included only when you ask, or prayer and Scripture as part of your work. Explain your preference and ask how the therapist follows your choices. Denominational affiliation is separate from professional qualification.

Confirm insurance and the total cost

Ask your insurer whether your specific plan covers the professional’s designation and service. Confirm session length, fee, currency, cancellation terms, receipts and any sliding-scale options. Direct billing means the practice may submit a claim; it does not guarantee that your plan will pay or cover the full fee.

Ask about online appointments

Tell the therapist where you will physically be during appointments and ask whether they can work with you there. Check the appointment platform, privacy arrangements, accessibility and what to do if the connection drops. An online listing does not establish authorization in every province.

Use the first conversation to assess fit

You can compare more than one professional before deciding. Sending a directory enquiry does not create a therapeutic relationship.
